Historique :	Portrait présumé de Monseigneur Guillaume René Meignan, archevêque de Tours (1817 – 1896). La couleur rouge qu’il porte en liseré sur son costume indique qu’il est cardinal. Ce qui a conduit à l’identifier avec Monseigneur Guillaume Meignan, qui fut archevêque de Tours, et cardinal. Il a laissé une trace matérielle de son épiscopat à Tours. C’est lui en effet qui a fait bâtir l’actuelle basilique de Saint-Martin, dont on vient de restaurer le dôme et la statue. Il est d’ailleurs inhumé dans la crypte de la basilique, comme le rappelle la statue de François Sicard qui s’y trouve (datée de 1900) et qui le représente en priant.

Précision_sur la representation :	Le cardinal porte sur le tableau la croix de chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, qu’il a obtenue le 14 juillet 1866. Il a ensuite été promu officier le 25 juillet 1891. On voit qu’il portait aussi sur le tableau une seconde décoration, que l’on a essayer d’effacer mais qui apparaît en négatif.Il s’agit des palmes académiques, correspondant au grade d’officier.
